I stood in an old white dress I hadn’t worn since my high school days, a simple knee-length sundress with thick shoulder straps that had lain long forgotten until I met Ralph. When I told him that I didn’t have anything at his house to wear, we’d driven back to my place. I’d dug through my closet in a panic, randomly stumbling across this beauty.
My hands were clasped in his, and I gazed with wonder at the man I was about to vow to spend the rest of my life with. Before we pulled into the courthouse, we had stopped by a Walmart, and the test had confirmed what I’d already known. I was pregnant.
I was still in such a daze that I barely heard the Justice of the Peace say the final words, declaring us husband and wife and allowing us to kiss.
Clutching his nice white button-down shirt that was tucked into his black dress pants, I dragged his mouth down to mine.
Not wanting to draw out the kiss in front of someone I wasn’t familiar with—even though I knew it was a silly thought—I broke the kiss and held his hand instead.
“Let’s go sign the paperwork and head home.”
I nodded in agreement.
We left the room, saying our goodbyes, and gave our thanks to the judge. We signed the paperwork in a rush, both of us eager to get out of the courthouse and back to his house to be alone.
Ralph ran with me to his car. I laughed with glee as he spun me around in his arms. Since we’d had a late start to the day, it had grown dark.
“Hello there, Mrs. Geikko. You’re looking very sexy today.”
Batting my eye lashes at him, I bit my bottom lip in a flirtatious way. I rose up on my toes and licked a slow line over his earlobe. “Hello to you, Mr. Geikko. Why don’t you take me to your house?” I asked, trying to sound seductive.
His brow furrowed in a frown. “You mean our house.” He strode forward, backing me up until my ass was sitting on the hood of his car.
He did have a point—we were married and expecting a baby. One of us would have to move in with the other, and his house was much larger than mine.
“What do you think I should do with my house? I don’t think I could sell it just yet. I just bought the place.”
His hand scratched at his chin for a moment and he hummed in the back of his throat. “We keep it and rent it. I have some co-workers who just got hitched not long ago and they’re looking for their first home. Maybe we could rent it to them until they’re ready to buy?”
“Do you think they’d be interested?”
“Yes.”
I pondered over the idea of letting my house go during the drive back. In the end, it wasn’t a hard decision to make. No matter what, I would always pick him.
I waited as he came around to my door to open it for me.
